The Golden Hippopotamus is located in the Shadow Keep within Scadu Altus, part of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Reaching this area involves going through a series of challenging enemies and complex pathways.
How To Beat Golden Hippopotamus In Elden Ring
Defeating the Golden Hippopotamus in Elden Ring requires strategic positioning, special dodging, and effective use of Spirit Summons. There are two phases of the fight.
Phase 1 Strategy
During the first phase of the fight, maintaining your position in the center of the arena is important. This strategy prevents you from getting cornered, providing ample space to dodge its attacks and run around the boss.
Dodging:
- Charge Attack: When the Golden Hippopotamus charges at you, sidestep to the left or right to avoid the attack.
- Slam Attack: The boss will sometimes perform a powerful slam attack. To avoid this, roll away from the impact zone as soon as you see it rear up for the slam.
- Combo Attacks: The Golden Hippopotamus can execute a series of quick combo attacks. Dodge backward to avoid these and look for openings to counter with a few hits when the combo ends.
Spirit Summons: Use your Spirit Summons to delay the boss’s attention. This strategy creates openings for you to attack while the boss is focused on the summoned spirits.
Phase 2 Strategy
Avoid Spike Attacks: In the second phase, the Golden Hippopotamus uses spike-based attacks. Maintain distance and dodge sideways to avoid these wide-area strikes.
Jumping Spike Roll: The boss sometimes performs a jumping spike roll. Time your dodge exactly to avoid taking damage.
Consistency: Keep using Phase 1 tactics like staying centered and using Spirit Summons. Adapt to new attack patterns, focusing on specific dodging, as the boss’s attacks become more varied and aggressive.
Golden Hippopotamus Rewards
After you defeat the Golden Hippopotamus by reducing its health to zero, you receive several rewards. These include the “Aspects of the Crucible: Thorns” incantation and two Scadutree Fragments. Also, defeating this boss unlocks the rest of the Shadow Keep, giving you access to the Ancient Ruins of Ruah.
